Hawaii has some of the most fantastic food in the world and has a large multicultural influence. One of the most popular Hawaiian main dishes is Chicken Long Rice. Chicken Long Rice has a unique taste and texture when compared. There are slight variations between the different islands as far as how the dish, is prepared but it’s usually served as a side or entree. If you have never tried it, this tasty recipe is a great way to get your feet wet with the traditional Hawaiian foods!
Peel the ginger and grate it finely, chop the garlic. Chop the green onion and put it in a small bowl and set aside.
Put the broth on medium heat, and add the chicken thighs.
Add the sugar and soy sauce to the pot, and after that the chopped garlic and ginger, mix gently.
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover the pot and simmer for 35 minutes.
While the broth and chicken thighs are cooking, take a large bowl and put the noodles in it and pour warm water over them. It is important that the water covers all the noodles.
Once the chicken thighs are cooked, take them out of the pan and remove the skin and bones.
Shred the chicken and add it back to the broth. Add the softened noodles to the pot as well.
Stir gently and cook over medium heat for 5-7 minutes, until the noodles are translucent.
The last step is to add green onions.
Though the origin of this dish is unclear, many presume it was introduced to Hawaii by Chinese immigrants who started arriving in the late 19th century. In fact, most people could accurately guess that this dish is of Chinese origin because of the presence ginger and garlic in the recipe.
These ingredients are staples when it comes to Chinese cooking. Chicken long rice is one of favorite dishes to eat while on an island vacation. Enjoy the combination of flavors from garlic, ginger that are combined with chicken and glass noodles. It is often served as a side dish, especially at a luau, but it is also enjoyable as an entree.
